Canadian Yellow Split Pea Soup with Ham

Creamy yellow split pea soup studded with bits of ham, carrots, celery, and thyme. There is nothing like this soup on a cold day! I am a Canadian now living in the United States and cannot get Habitant soup anymore, so I came up with this version. I think it is as good as the real thing, if not better because it is homemade.

Preparation Time:

  • 120 min

Ingredients:

  • 500g of yellow split peas
  • 1L of chicken broth
  • 200g of smoked ham, diced
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 large carrots, diced
  • 2 stalks of celery, diced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp of dried thyme
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • Large pot
  • Blender
  • Wooden spoon
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Instructions:

  • Rinse the split peas under cold water and set aside.
  • In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions, garlic, carrots, and celery. Sauté until vegetables are softened and onions are translucent.
  • Add the diced ham and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Stir in the yellow split peas, chicken broth, bay leaves, and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Simmer for about 90 minutes, or until the split peas are tender and starting to break apart.
  • Remove the bay leaves. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup to your desired consistency.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.
